It would be nice to have a filter that would only show you the general class in the spotting.
Hi Charles
Welcome to WRL!
This would certainly be a very useful filter for all US General Class License holders.
Since WRL (with “W” = “World”) wants to address all hams worldwide and license permissions vary greatly depending on the country, the suggestion is somewhat one-sided. So let’s search a solution which fits for everybody.
A possible solution could be as follows: The filter settings can be saved and restored with a single click. This would allow each user to save the filter settings that match their license. So we should ask the WRL Team for feature request in this manner.

Good suggestion @HB9EVT and @WB4GKB - we are about to make a release right now that will persist spotting filters, which will be a nice improvement.
We haven’t considered adding User Filters to spotting yet → such as filtering users by license class or other user data. It is an interesting suggestion.
I’m curious to learn more about this.
- Is there any use to filtering for users that have a specific license class?
- Or, is the idea to be able to filter further to a specific frequency range?
What would be the major use case here? Understanding how this helps could help us prioritize, especially since we have several other spotting enhancements we are planning!
This is good news! tnx!
Two examples come to mind:
1)
The 80m band runs
- in IARU Region 1 from 3500 to 3800 kHz;
- in IARU Region 2 from 3500 to 4000 kHz and
- in IARU Region 3 from 3500 to 3900 kHz.
Situated in Region 1 or 3, I’m not interested in spots outside my area that I’m allowed to use. I’d like to filter those out.
2)
f I participate in a contest and the contest rules define a limited frequency range, then I would like to be able to reduce the spots to this frequency range.

If we could set the filter to only the frequency we can use would help. With is seeing a DX station and with rig control you could hit the spot and transmit outside of your class. This would be nice for newer hams and us that see a nice DX calling CQ and not see that its not in are class .
I think a user settable band plan would be a great addition/benefit. That way you would customize each band for operating class and country band plan. Example 20m US and Canada. Both are North America with different band privileges. I am sure each country would benefit from being able setup band limits to ensure compliance with your license.
If you go from US General to Extra, you can modify your band template to reflect your new privileges.

I think both options would be useful. Fortunately, my radio has the option to disable transmit on frequencies I cannot legally transmit on (e.g., 14.175-14.225 on 20m), but many radios do not.
Referring to his suggestion as one-sided is a bit unfair.
I’m familiar with your quest to defend the ‘W’ in WRL, but implementing a change that is applicable only to a particular region does not devalue WRL. A quick and easy filter to show only “USA-General License Frequencies” would have broad appeal. The programming team can create similar filters for other regions, perhaps using your suggestion.
Eliminating region-specific features could lead to the absurd result that we must pay for WRL subscriptions with Bitcoin because operators in Switzerland cannot pay in USD.
Hi Jack @KF0EEK
It would be one-sided if only filters for US classes were implemented.
But if there is a freely adjustable filter that every user can set, save, and load according to their needs (where ever they live), I have absolutely no objection to additional hard-coded filters that appeal to large user groups. I respect that the vast majority of all WRL users live in the United States and that their needs must be given special consideration.

Pepe @HB9EVT,
That’s the reason I suggested the user definable band templates. They could be created by users and put into a community share (vetted first) or open example area (non-share just examine as a guide (Safer)).
Just would like to have that for those of use with radios that do not have that feature.
I know some contesting loggers have that built in to their systems.

I’m not sure if I’m +1’ing this idea or spinning something off in a new direction, but it would be very cool to be able to click modes and license levels to see the Band Plan view (the one you get when you click ‘View Band Plan’ on top of the Spotting page) change to highlight just those areas of the bands that would correspond to the mode you want to operate and the license you have. A visual answer to the question, “I’m a General and I want to run phone on 40m, 20m, and 15m; what frequency ranges should I aim for?”
Maybe this becomes unnecessary once one gains more experience, but as a new ham it seems like a dynamic way to know your options.
