Coverage update

After some fine tuning and reprograming, I have an effective 100-300 mile coverage in my area for 2m. Not too shabby for day 2 of having my license if I say so myself! All you HF guys can laugh but I’m proud.

No reason to laugh, that’s an impressive distance. Tell us how you’re able to make contacts so far away.

Equipment… power… antenna height… etc.

Nice! Antenna height can sure make a difference! My TRAM UHF/VHF mobile antenna, being mounted to my roof, is 15ft high. Testing its capabilities in terms of distance by connecting to nearby repeaters, I find that my signal cannot travel further than 40 miles.

300 miles is a huge footprint for 2m repeater that’s quite an accomplishment. Our club W4GTA repeater is on top of Lookout Mountain and is linked to another one on Signal Mountain. Both are over 2500’ in elevation and 300 miles is probably the best they will do. And both are on commercial towers of radio stations for Chattanooga and surrounding area. Great job on setting up your repeater. Our repeaters are EchoLink and Allstate capable. With that being the case we have guys from Great Britain and Australia who frequent them. We have a great bunch of hams in out club and the morning commute starts around 6-6:30 and is called the morning zoo. But congratulations on the great job on setting up your repeater. Have fun.
