Is there a training cw radio that can be used for the real qso. I just passed general license and technician same day.i am waiting for my call sign. Paid 35 dollars for fee. I’m excited to learn hobby.?
Hi Brad, and congratulations for your General!
There are several cheap CW decoders available; just type ‘CW Decoder’ into Google, and you’ll find a few. As a CW operator, I prefer to operate CW and listen to the responses without using those decoders. It’s great to see that you’re excited about CW! I recommend using apps to help you learn Morse code. While you’re learning, you can use a CW decoder.
I started learning morse code with cassettes in 1995

Do tose have a key to use to send and reapt
Meant those.is there one that coud do tain and use lateron to use for real?
Sorry, I don’t understand what you mean
You mean if I use a CW key?
If its possible to get a real cw keyer. Setup and learn on it others words.i want to be able train and later on use same thing.
I am new so want something i can train on and use in real life situations if they even have anything like that . Or if i learn on decoder then have to buy the real radio station for cw frequency. If I’m making sense.
MFJ makes a CW code practice oscillator that can also be used as a CW paddle.
I looked at some of their stuff can you find out what model. Also are you saying that the paddle i could use later on and thanks for all you’ve done to answer my questions 73
The one I have is the MFJ 422. Here is the eham link for it: MFJ-422. I don’t know if it’s still in production, but I picked mine up used at a local hamfest. Keep an eye on the used market, and you can definitely check around to see if it or a variant of it is still being produced. Also, some radios will produce a sidetone that is good for practice without actually transmitting. Hope that helps!

Awesome, thanks for the info! I have seen one on YouTube made bt pieutkeg? Mini or something like that. Is little white box. Putikeeg, and mfj-422. I’ll check there site or look for used thanks again
Hi Brad
I started with a straight key, and practiced. For example, if I already knew 5 letters in morse code, I would go to a frequency (with low power) and start transmitting and listening to the letters I already knew. For example, I would transmit dit dah, di dah . which is the letter A. I would keep doing this until I could make a QSO at low speed. Then when I could listen at higher speed I bought a Keyer Paddle.
Great! Appreciate the help
As far as a reasonably priced radio which decodes and has other features, check out the Sbitx… https://www.hfsignals.com/ There are a few videos showing how it can be used with SSB CW and FT8 without the need for an external computer, software etc. You can use a keyboard to send CW etc. If you haven’t already heard about it…Look into W1AW schedule…which broadcasts CW on air for practice at different speeds. Also many great youtube videos and websites to help you learn.
Thanks for your help I will check it out.
