I got an iCOM-728 from a friend, but it doesn’t have a microphone. How can I be sure it works before purchasing an ICOM microphone, which is expensive?
@KN6USU Are you planning to use the radio for digital operation (which wouldn’t require a microphone)? If you prefer voice modes, then a microphone is mandatory.
Hello KJ5LMZ, Thank you for your quick response. My primary mode of communication is Voice mode.
Your Welcome! Always happy to help! Your radio (the IC-728) supports an 8-pin round connection. While you can search on DXEngineering for top-notch 8-pin round mic’s, here’s a money-friendly alternative:
Hello Daren,
I appreciate the reference. I saw it on Amazon, but it did not list the IC-728 as a replacement mic. I will purchase it and return it if it does not work.
Thank you again for your help and support.

Marco

Hello Daren, can you also recommend an Antenna? I saw the HYS amateur Pre-Tunned Dual Band NMO Antenna for 2m 70m. What do you think?
Sure thing! Your radio (an HF transceiver) is not compatible with a 2m 70cm (VHF/UHF) antenna. Instead, I would recommend this high-quality, telescopic (portable) HF antenna perfect for your radio! You can tune it to your desired band by adjusting the length to the included marked numbers (bypassing the need for an antenna tuner which enables more transmitting power).
However, if you want to look into a UHF or VHF transceiver (perfect for mobile operation) then the HYS amateur Pre-Tuned Dual Band NMO Antenna would work fine! (even though there are better brands such as TRAM)
Hello KJ5LMX, Thank you for the wonderful feedback.
Regards,
Marco
Hello KJ5LMX, if the ICOM 728 passes the first test with the cheap antenna I will save up for the better one.
Thank you for your help and support
