Newbie looking for best antenna to put on flag pole for base station

CQ this is KF8CHL, aka Wallace, just got my Technician license will take General in December. Initial I will only have a handheld radio but after the holidays will start looking for my initial base station. I have a 25’ flag pole next to my workshop with a small office to avoid dust of all type. The shop is a 20x20 metal enclosed carport. The reason I am looking at using the flagpole is it is retractable making it easier to attach the antenna. Also considering putting a mast on the carport.

Will eventually get a mobile rig for when I travel, not interested in mounting in a vehicle, but the boss (XL) says I have to wait until I prove to her how active I will be.

I hope I used the correct terms.

The obvious possibility is a vertical , BUT that would require RADIALS . Radials may not be suitable , depending on the lay out of the area near your flag pole . For a 25 ft flag pole , you could make the antenna suitable for 30M band and, with an antenna tuner, use it on 30 through 10M .

I agree with K3UK a flag pole isn’t your best option since verticals require radials. If you have a way I would look at di-pole for a stater. They make all types or if you want to really learn the hobby you can build your own, many guides and videos on how to. Just know that most will require a tuner also.

I put up a loop about 140’ long total and about 25’ high. Highly directional when transmitting but works great and noise level is β€œ0”. Youtube has a lot of videos on them. cheap and easy to put up.
