I’m studying to take the first level course. I haven’t bought any equipment yet. I need to know what to buy. I will buy everything I need to communicate with my son in South Carolina from New Jersey. My wife is Vietnamese and we spend the NJ winter in Saigon for 6 months in our house there. I’m a newbie in this field and could use some help and guidance.

To start, a dual band radio (70cm & 2M) would be good. With the Technician you have privileges in a portion of the 10M. Then an HF radio would be good also. In the future you will want to get the General and Extra and with the HF you will be able to use from 10M to 160M. Also with Technician you can use the 6M. Does your son already have a license? or is it in process like you? Regarding which radio you want, that depends on your budget. Remember that it is not just the radio, you will also need antenna, coaxial, etc.
