Wsjtx & ft991a [ANSWERED]

Hello all…I’m sure I’m overlooking something.

I’ve downloaded the new CAT control integrations app. I want to do WSJT while integrating this radio (FT8 and CAT control). Am I wrong that it’s on the same port, so they can’t be at the same time?

I’ve tried to have the app listen to the UDP port, without CAT control also and it’s not logging my QSO. Again, it’s probably operator error, just looking for another perspective to drive me in the right direction.

Good morning. I’ve wrote up some instructions with screenshots that will help. Most people use gridtracker in conjunction with WSJTX (or JTDX) and cat control to give a visual view of where other FT8 users are. I’ve included this in the instructions as well as logging a qso to qrz. The QRZ integration is done from the gridtracker settings. Its all about having the correct port numbers set for each application.

WRL Cat Control / WSJTX / GridTracker / QRZ Integration Steps:

  1. Go to the hamlib site and make sure you’ve got the latest hamlib version installed (this may or may not be necessary BUT it is a step i did) - If your on windows download the .exe - Release Hamlib 4.6.2 · Hamlib/Hamlib · GitHub)

  2. Start the following apps in the following order. Start WRL Cat Control first (then connect to your radio and make sure its connected then start WSJTX listening after making sure the port is set like in the screenshot labeled “WORKING-WSJTX-WRL-catControl-SETTINGS”), then start Grid Tracker, Then start WSJTX or JTDX (whichever you prefer).

  3. Then go into the settings for GridTracker and under ‘General’ set the ports to match the screenshot I’ve attached labeled “WORKING-GRIDTRACKER-SETTINGS-1”. Then go to the “Logging” tab and set two things that are highlighted red in the screenshot labeled “WORKING-GRIDTRACKER-SETTINGS-2”. NOTE: since there is no WRL option in GridTracker i enabled the last option that says “HRD Logbook” and tied it to the same port. Again, this may or may not be necessary but this is what I did.

  4. Then go to your WSJTX / JTDX settings and go to the “Radio” tab and make sure its set to hamlib (and NOT your radio name) as well as click the “Update Hamlib” button at the bottom of the screen (this is highlighted red in the screenshot “WORKING-WSTJX-rigSETTINGS”) NOTE: after clicking the ‘update hamlib’ button you’ll need to close and reopen WSTJX)

  5. Then reopen the WSTJX Settings and go to the “Reporting” tab in WSJTX and make sure everything is setup the same way it shows in the screenshot “WORKING-WSJTX-reportingSETTINGS”

Then make a contact, once the logging window pops up in WSJTX add your power and comment (if you add this information) and click the ok button to log the QSO. After about a second or so the contact will show up in your WRL logbook and it will show up in your QRZ logbook. I’ve also added a screenshot of the JTDX settings if you prefer to use that instead of WSJTX, if not you can ignore that screenshot.

Let me know if this works

Perfect! Had to restart the computer to get it to work, but made a qso and it logged it promptly. Thank you so much for the reply and assistance!

@KO4WIY Steve,

Can you elaborate? I’ve had several users that had this issue and once following my instructions were able to get it working as expected. What radio are you using? What isn’t working?

I am running an FT-891 with a Digirig DR-891 through WXJT-x and Grid Tracker, I watched a Demo that Andy posted and it looked super simple, But I had no real success, I then found this thread and I followed the lengthy instructions but still did not seem to have any CAT control, This CAT Screen did show my Freq but it never shifted when I dialed into FT-8 . WXJT-X and Grid Tracker did control Freq, But WRL didnt , I did assume that my COM Port was the same as WXJT-X COM3 and I did try the other PORT , I did the Grid trackers setting called out too.. but NO Joy Yet…

@KO4WIY Hey Steve,

I think there’s just a misunderstanding, If your doing FT8 with wsjtx/jtdx and have everything connected per my instructions the only way the WRL webapp will change the frequency is if you are in the ‘Spotting’ tab inside your logbook and you double click a contact from the spotting tab. However there no need to do this as it should all be controlled via wsjtx/jtdx instead, ie by double clicking on a contact from the left window of wstjx/jtdx. Once you make a contact and goto log that contact the log window in wsjtx/jtdx will pop up, you enter the details and log the contact which in turn logs it in grid tracker (and qrz if you have it enabled in the grid tracker settings) and then in your WRL logbook. I hope this makes sense and helps.

Brad , That explains a bunch… Thanks for clearing that up…as for selecting my ComPort , Do I use the same one as wxjt-x

@KO4WIY Good morning Steve,

So the only place you select the com port is in the WRL Cat control app (also making sure your selecting the correct baud rate you have your radio set to). When you open WSJTX/JTDX and go into the radio settings, you need to make sure the radio is NOT selected and that you are using the option called ‘Hamlib NET rigctl’. This have WSJTX/JTDX connect to the radio over hamlib (which is what the WRL Cat control app uses). I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions or need a hand with anything else, happy to help.
