Hello all! I’m a new ham with my Technician license on October 3rd and my General license on December 5th.
Today, I made my first DX QSO! I was dialing through the 10m band and heard someone with an Eastern European accent working lots of contacts. I could only hear his side of the QSOs, though. Eventually there was a gap in the transmissions and I was able to key in with my callsign – and he ANSWERED me!
I exchanged callsigns and names and reception reports with Rosta (OK2PVF) in the Czech Republic! Using 100 watts from my IC-7300 and a 10m crossed double bazooka antenna strung up in my attic, I was able to hear Rosta clear as a bell from 4600 miles away. He gave me a 5-7 report on my transmission.
What a thrill!
Huge thanks to Ham Radio Prep for giving me the ability to earn my license and experience this awesome hobby.
Congratulations Keane, that’s the fun part HF radio. Those DXs, try dialing down the power. You’ll be surprised what 20 watts can do. Enjoy, it’s a fun hobby!

Best feeling in your ham radio journey. Enjoy and you will never forget this one. Good DX. 10 M is alive & kicking a fascinating band. I use a modest Radio Oddity QT-80 on ten, otherwise QRP CW 5W all HF bands
