Hello from Southern California

Hi everyone, I’m KA1N / Michael from West Covina in Southern California. I got my Ham License at the end of 2023 but didn’t get more active until earlier this year. Looking forward learning more about the hobby and logging contacts.

Question: I’m still in the process of getting an HF transceiver. So far, I only have handhelds and have been using DMR, D-Star, etc. through a hotspot. Does anyone log these type of contacts or do people usually only log analog contacts on HF?

Hi Michael

Welcome to WRL !

Customs vary greatly from region to region. An OM from your region will be able to explain what is typical in the US or on the West Coast.

In Western Europe, contacts via VHF/UHF repeaters are typically logged during the first contact and not during subsequent connections with the same OM. However, there are also OMs who write every connection in their log, but only send a QSL card (paper or digital) for the first connection.
The same applies to DMR. However, there are also OMs who never make a logbook entry for DMR.

I personally log everything, even the 247th QSO with my buddy who lives half a mile away. And I send a QSL card for each voice connection, even for DMR or repeater connections, regardless if it’s a first or repeat contact. :100: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: However, my buddy doesn’t get 247 QSL cards. I don’t think he would appreciate it.

And now I’m curious to hear what’s typical in the US.

When I first was licensed, you legally had to log everything. Today I still do, with the exception of VHF repeater contacts and things like that.
