In the US, it’s very straightforward with an exam after some studying. There are multiple programs, books and courses to help you study. Ham Radio Prep and Hamstudy are both known to be excellent and have built-in practice tests so you can gauge your readiness to test.
You can also get your GMRS with just a fee and no test and use the GMRS frequencies, which include some repeaters. It’s a good way to dip your feet in and get talking on a radio quickly while you’re working on your ham radio license(s).
And forums like this are a great place to ask questions, get clarification on a question/answer for the test, or find guidance in general.

Yes, I can not recommend ham radio prep enough.
