Overwhelmed newbie

First of all let me introduce myself, my name is Dave. I’m totally new to HAM and all the other types of comms. I’m a retired LEO (law enforcement officer) who now has a ton of time on his hands so I decided to get into this national/international type(s) of communication.

I have yet to even get licensed or purchase a radio although I have been studying for my exam. After doing about 45 days of research my head is just swimming with all the types of radios and different features they have. Plus different power outputs and the terminology which I have no understanding whatsoever.

This is the reason I joined the group to try and gain some working knowledge and to PLEASE ask for help. Thank you in advance !

Are you aware of any amateur radio clubs in your area? If so, they are a great place to start. Lots of info usually and usually some good deals on used gear for newbies. Good luck! de W6OBB ~mike olsen

Hey Dave! Thanks for joining, you’re in the right place!

It’s a lot to take in, which is exactly why we started Ham Radio Prep and the World Radio League.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Get your Technician license. You’ll learn a lot along the way. Ham Radio Prep is the best balance of learning some of the basics, but it’s short enough so you can get through it quickly.
  2. Buy a handheld. I recommend getting something not too expensive. Then, you’re going to want to make your first contact!
  1. After that, it’s time to upgrade to your General license and start learning HF (High Frequency) operating. This is where you’ll unlike worldwide communications.

Hope that helps and you’re very welcome here!

The How To Make First Contact vid was great. It was very informative and they made it simple enough in terms that even a HAM simpleton like me can understand.
