I have radio issues

I have a FT-991a, back it June to the present I am having trouble with the noise, at first people were at least readable but now it’s impossible to hear what they are saying. Last Friday, I had answered a transmission FT 5DR, so I know that it’s not environmental issues.

Hi @KC1LFK

Many things can cause noise. Solar panels, electrical lines, LED bulbs, towers where they have internet or telephone repeaters, etc.

Is that noise on all bands? What antenna do you have?

I hadn’t done anything different before this happened, I have a Compactenna, 6m-70cm however because I don’t have the counterpoise for 6m, I was only able to use it for 2m.

This may seem so obvious that it is not worth mentioning, but I had so much noise, I could not even communicate on my FTDX10. Our electric utility buried the overhead lines, and it was completely gone - no noise whatsoever now.

You may not have done anything different but your neighbors may have. A near by utility pole could be the issue, get an old AM radio with an antenna and put it on a clear frequency and hear the “hiss” and walk around your place listening for louder noise. Also walk around your neighborhood and focus on utility poles or boxes listening for louder noise. If you find a pole (transformer) call your utility company and request them to investigate for RFI on that spot.
Good luck.

I also use the 991A. I find that most of my noise issues are corrected with the DNR function. It has 15 different options to select, please note that each of the 15 is totally different and does not improve incrementally from 1 to 15, you need to try each of the 15 settings to find the best one for reducing the particular noise you are experiencing.
