Learning in Las Vegas

I’m sure most folks already know this but I learned how it works in real time and was pretty excited to see it working. I “knew” about repeater offset, but only set it up in Chirp and never thought about it. I was talking to a gent who was 10 miles away, on a repeater. He said, I’m going to tell you how I made my antenna, and you hit the reverse button while I’m talking. If you hear me just fine, that means we can talk on simplex and not tie up a repeater.
Now, I understood how the offset worked in theory, but i have never thought to try it while someone was talking. So we switched to 446.000 to keep chatting. We tried different power levels on the HT. different antennas. It was extremely educational to see it work in practice.

That’s awesome Dane!! Did you upgrade your antenna or get an external antenna?

Asking because I am thinking of getting an external VHF/UHF antenna for my handheld to get better range. Or maybe even just upgrade to a nicer VHF/UHF transceiver here at home

I have the Abbree 19 inch foldable antenna on mine and he had an upgraded antenna on his also. He was out walking around. I was only able to sit in one spot.
Having the external Mic / speaker helped my reception a lot because I kept the HT away from me.
I was looking into a mobile dual band transceiver for a home base also just because of all the repeater action around here
