I am a new-ish technician licensee. I have a Baofeng F8HP. When I received it a few days ago, I was able to connect to some local repeaters to monitor. Every 10 minutes or so, I’d hear the repeater call sign (sometimes spoken, sometimes CW). Now, I don’t seem to be able to connect. I programmed using CHIRP software and I’m 100% positive I’ve got the PL Tone, frequency and offset correct for the repeaters. I tried to listen in to some nets last night with no luck. I even tried to factory reset the HT and manually programmed the frequencies with no luck. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance 73…

Unfortunately, I cannot see in my crystal ball what you are doing wrong. ![]()
But a typical beginner’s mistake would be confusing output and input frequency: Is the sending frequency of the repeater the receiving frequency in your handheld radio?
Another thing worth trying: remove the sub-audio tone on your receiving frequency (= frequency on which the repeater transmits). If there is something wrong with the sub-audio tone, you would now hear the repeater again.
Good luck!
If it still doesn’t work, go to the nearest OM or Ham Club and ask for help.

Thanks so much for your help. I’m hearing some repeaters, but not others. And I made my first QSO today! I have a lot to learn.
