Remote Station Operation

Hey WRL,

Sooner or later it will come up that the app needs to help support remote station operation.

For instance - remotehams.com or remotehamradio.com

For WRL it would be nice to have a single click to change my location to TX, NH, MN, GA or any other remote station ‘location’ for a single session.

For instance if I log into a TX remote station I would always use K0PLT as my operator ID but I would also always use TX as my location

P.S. the new WRL CAT control works great with my RCForbs lLient software when I operare remote I can instantly click on POTA spoting and the remore station changes to that frequency and WRL fills in all the details (except for my ‘location’)

This is some good info from RHR:

:light_bulb: When in doubt…
It’s pretty straightforward: most of the time, just use your own callsign.

Because you have a U.S. license and are operating stations within the U.S., you do not need any further identification beyond your regular callsign.

:globe_showing_americas: What about my location?
It doesn’t matter where you are sitting – what really matters is where the RF is being emitted.

When sharing your location with other operators, you should explicitly use the location of the station you are operating. Every station has its county, state, CQ region, ITU region, and grid square listed at the top.

For example, if you are exchanging grid squares during a VHF contest, send the grid square of the station you are connected to, not the grid square of where you, the operator, are physically located.

You may choose to add a prefix or suffix to your callsign to identify the geographic region of the station you are remotely operating, but it is not required.

:prohibited: What NOT to do
Never identify yourself using a non-U.S. callsign.

Never identify yourself using someone else’s callsign.

Never claim to be operating from your home location instead of the remote station’s location.

@KOPLT Hey Peter,

Can you simply setup multiple saved locations in your account and set those as ‘remote’ and then just click the location setting in the quick settings bar above the main logging fields and select that remote location, then save it and start logging.

Here is a screen recording:

Hey Brad,

That figures, WRL would already have something, and simple to boot!

Hey Brad,

Do I have to select location by using it as default or is there another way/place to do the swap?

@KOPLT Just create your saved location via ‘My Profile’ → ‘My operating locations’ then either create a new logbook or open an existing logbook and click the location setting in the quick settings bar and change the location. Its all in the screen recording above.

Would this work for mobile operations, or is there a different way to log those locations? 100 of my operating is from my vehicle, always parked, but usually in different locations.

@N7FAN For this scenario if you are using the mobile app (which i would assume you are) you can just go into the logbook settings (gear icon) and under the ‘export adif’ button you can click the ‘find my location’ and it will auto find the gridsquare you are currently in, set that click the save LINK then click the save button.

Yup, the suggestions given here work for me as I use both of the above sources exclusively. However, RHR is switching from Flex to Icom rigs and using TCI instead of the Flex SDR, so WRL CAT currently won’t work. But WRL will be adding TCI soon, and we’ll be back in business!

One thing to keep in mind is when LOTW upload is added, we’ll need to have an option to change our locations (based on the ones we have set up in TQSL) there as well.
