Non-Contest Use of Logbooks

I am newish ham trying to dig deeper into the hobby. I only have VHF/UHF currently, but have a FT5DR HT that allows me to access Yaesu Digital. I have been listening to different rooms through WiresX to get a feel for communication styles and work through mic fright.

I am ready to start joining the conversation, but do not want to upset folks, so I will ask this question: Is it appropriate for me to start a logbook to document my contacts using Fusion contacts, so I can better see and track who I am talking to? I see there is a Option for “Fusion” in the mode menu.

I know this is not related to POTA/SOTA or any of the other HF uses where there is a requirement to log contacts for points.

@K9QJA Hey Mark,

Of course, you can create a new logbook (or use an existing one) and then just enter the callsign of the person you are making a contact with, set the freq, band and mode and then log the contact.

Here is a quick screen recording: Loom | Free Screen & Video Recording Software | Loom

Hope this helps!

Thanks Brad!

I appreciate the work that has been put into the platform and want to use it while I work towards getting my HF equipment!

The last few weeks have been fun digging everything back out and refreshing knowledge, while finding new capabilities to get connected.

Thank you again.

@K9QJA sorry Loom has changed the privacy settings by default and I forgot to set it to public. You should be good now.

@K9QJA Hi Mark, I just wanted to clarify that there is no “requirement” on HF to log contacts unless you are a POTA/SOTA activator wanting to get credit for a Park or a Summit, or if you’re actively participating in a contest in which you have to submit a log.

You probably already understand that, but from the wording above I just wanted to make sure that anyone brand new to the hobby reading that didn’t get the wrong impression.
