Hey @WAND3R3R , I would recommend getting started with a handheld first, then maybe a mobile VHF/UHF radio.

Here are some recommendations on handhelds: The Best Handheld Ham Radios (2025) – Ham Radio Prep

Hi, i’m Toti LZ3AW from Bulgaria. Thank you for having me. WRL platform is very modern, intuitive and there is a big potential. Keep developing it.

N9AWG here.
I’ve been quiet for a while, but getting back in. Currently Tech level and have a Portable Kenwood D75, Icom mobile that will get into my car soon.
I am studying for General license.

Hi, I was first licensed in 1968 and got the Advanced ticket soon thereafter. The Extra came a number of years later.

There are a lot of logging software programs out there, and a good deal of online apps as well. But this interface is one of the best that I’ve seen and it will be interesting to see how it develops.

I use N3FJP for my main log and N1MM for contesting. Everything gets uploaded to QRZ, LOTW, and Clublog. So, why not one more!

Hello everyone, I’m EA5JWS, a novice radio amateur, as I’ve only had my callsign for a few days. To pass the exam, I used Google’s vast knowledge to learn the legal and technical aspects. Now it’s time to practice to improve, so that’s why I’m here to start communicating through the airwaves and continue learning about this world, which is very broad but which I consider very useful. Any advice or recommendations are appreciated. For now, I’ll be using VHF, UHF, and EchoLink.

Thanks to everyone

Hello to all licensed and active Hams. My name is Evan V44NYZ. I have a general license which I obtained on Dec 13th, 2024 approx 6 months ago. I am enjoying the hobby immensely as time goes by. My main radios that I use so far are my portable a Baofeng BF-F8HP which works astonishingly good for now and a mobile Kenwood TM 281 (VHF) which I am using as my station radio for the time being. I am working on getting an HF or an All bands radio for the station at my QTH. I have no particular frequency that I really cling to as I am j just starting out so I make contact wherever and whenever with whomever I can. I can’t wait to get on HF where I hear that’s where all the fun is.
I am from the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. (Twin Island Paradise). I live on the island of Nevis in the Jones Estate area.
I look forward to making many contacts and friends from this hobby. Happy to be here. Have a great Ham Radio one. We touch base soon.
73s for now.

Hello, my name is Rodney. I live in Kansas City, Kansas. I just got my technician call sign this morning KF0ULR. Yee haw! I’m an engineer by profession and have always been into electronics and mechanics. i got turned on to Gnu Radio SDR and realized how much I don’t know about radio. I figured getting a HAM license and joining a radio club would give me an opportunity to learn more. So here I am. Ready to learn.

Yee haw is right! That’s how I felt after I got my Tech 57 years ago. Back then, you had to go to an FCC office where mean old guys (that’s how I remembered them!) would test you on sending and receiving Morse code!

Morse is one of the things on my list to learn. Probably my top priority is getting a radio. All I have at the moment is an RDL-SDR receiver only. I’m open to suggestions. I’d like to be able to TX and RX on the largest range of frequencies as I can afford. I could go with a Hack RF which is 1 MHz - 6 GHz? But I am not sure I want to be tied to a computer all the time. Anyway, the journey begins. I have already met a few really cool people. 73 and out.

Right now, I’m 100% remote because of a very noisy location and antenna restrictions. But for quite a while, I had an Icom-706MKIIG, which did everything I needed in one little box.

They don’t make them anymore, but it was really the classic all-mode, all-band 100-watt transceiver. I sold it a few years ago, but probably shouldn’t have done so. I had the extra SSB and CW filters in it, and it worked very well.

There are a few for sale on eBay or maybe other sources. Check around.

@KQ4Y very cool!

By the way, we haven’t forgotten about your feature suggestion of adding ā€œRemoteā€ to the location type drop-down  It’s on the list and we will get to it!

Hi Paul liked your childhood story, I too played with my pops radio when he wasn’t around. Sometimes I would get responses and was nicknamed sugar baby. Now a licensed Technician in the Ham Fam. @KO6KEI Jen
