Hi WRL Team,
First, I want to say how much I appreciate the work you’re doing with World Radio League—it’s become one of my favorite logging platforms, and I’m excited about its growing adoption and future potential.
As a cybersecurity engineer and active club member, I’d like to suggest a feature enhancement focused on improving security and scalability for group operations:
Feature Request: Club Account Structure with Role-Based Access
Currently, clubs often create a single shared account and distribute the credentials among multiple operators for events such as Field Day or Winter Field Day. While this approach is functionally adequate, it introduces security risks and violates best practices for account hygiene—particularly due to password sharing and lack of traceable user activity.
I propose the following enhancement:
- Dedicated Club Account Type: Allow clubs to register a special account that is distinct from a standard individual user account.
- Operator Invitations & Role-Based Access: Enable club accounts to invite individual WRL users to participate as operators under the club’s callsign for a specific event or logbook. This preserves accountability and avoids password sharing.
- Scoped Access: Operators would have access only during the specified event window (e.g., Field Day), and only to the associated logbook. Once the event concludes, access could be automatically revoked or require renewal.
- Audit Trail & Attribution: Logs could include metadata noting which user submitted each contact, enhancing accountability and making it easier to audit logs later.
- Optional Admin Controls: Allow the club account to assign admin roles to trusted members who can manage event permissions and operators.
Benefits:
- Stronger security posture by eliminating shared credentials
- Clear user attribution in logs
- Easier log management for clubs and event coordinators
- Encourages new user registrations and platform growth
- Aligns WRL with security best practices followed in enterprise and community software
Thanks again for all the hard work going into WRL. I’m happy to discuss this further if needed, and I look forward to seeing what’s next.
