Logging FT8 Contacts with WRL Isn't Working with WSJT-X :(

I just started using FT8 several days ago. WRL isn’t logging the contacts. I followed the directions that I found on YouTube, here’s the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdS8GoSSMxI.

WSJT-X is working fine. I’ve logged several contacts with the log within WSJT-X. I then have to import that log file manually into WRL. Is anyone else having the FT8 logging issue I’m having?

I should also state that WRL CAT control works when I’m using SSB to make contacts.

I’m using a Yaesu FT-710. Any help would be appreciated.

@KE2GLS you have to make sure that the UDP Ports are set correctly as well as your radio settings are set correctly.

Important Notes:

  • Go to ‘Device Manager’ –> ‘Ports (COM & LPT)’ and right click on your COM port for your radio, then click ‘Properties’

  • Under the ‘Port Settings’ Tab, make sure you have set the baud rate under the ‘Bits Per Second’ drop down that you’ve set inside your radio settings (do this for both COM ports for your radio, if you have more than 1).

  • If you have a ‘Power Management’ Tab make sure to uncheck/disable the two options here that say “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” & “Allow this device to wake the computer”

    FTdx101D/MP | FTdx10 | FT710 Users:

    • In your radio settings in the “Operation Settings” menu –> “General” make sure to set the ‘CAT RATE” to “38400” (or whatever you’ve set in the “Port Settings” tab in Device Manager)

    • In your radio settings in the “Operation Settings” menu –> “General” make sure to set the ‘CAT TIME OUT TIMER” to “100msec” (10msec is too fast and will cause time-out errors)

If you follow the following integration setups, please make sure you set the UDP ports the same throughout all three apps as show in the screenshots. Also pay attention and set each setting/checkbox as enabled/disabled as shown in the screenshots.

WRL Cat Control / WSJTX / GridTracker / QRZ Integration Steps:

  1. Start by going to the integrations page in WRL making sure you have the latest cat control app (World Radio League)
  2. Start the following apps in the following order (this seems to be important). Start WRL Cat Control first (then connect to your radio and make sure its connected then start WSJTX listening after making sure the port is set like in the screenshot labeled “WRL-CAT.png”), then start Grid Tracker, Then start WSJTX or JTDX (whichever you prefer).
  3. Then go into the settings for GridTracker and under ‘General’ set the ports to match the screenshot i’ve attached labeled “GridTracker-General.png”. Then goto the “Logging” tab and set two things that are highlighted red in the screenshot labeled “GridTracker-Reporting.png”. NOTE: since there is no WRL option in GridTracker i enabled the last option that says “HRD Logbook” and tied it to the same port. This is important.
  4. Then go to your WSJTX / JTDX settings and go to the “Radio” tab and make sure the radio drop down is set to hamlib (See WSJTX-Radio.png), Then goto the Reporting tab and set everything EXACTLY as it shows in the screenshot labeled WSJTX-Reporting.
  5. Then you’ll need to close everything and then reopen it all in the following order from here on out (the start order is important too). Start with WRL Cat Control, connect your radio and start the UDP listener, then open Grid Tracker and let it load up, then open WSJTX.

At this point everything should be setup to correctly talk to one another. Make a contact, once the logging window pops up in WSJTX, add your power and comment (if you add this information) and click the ok button to log the QSO.

After about a second or so the contact will show up in your WRL logbook .I’ve also added a screenshot of the JTDX settings if you prefer to use that instead of WSJTX, I personally do. if not you can ignore that screenshot.

Hope this helps

Hi Brad,

I tried to update to the latest version of the CAT software but my antivirus program says it’s infected with malware. Obviously I’m not comfortable opening it on my computer. Can you look into it and see what the problem is?

Best,
Matt KE2GLS

@KE2GLS Hey Matt,

There is nothing in the cat control app, some virus software will trigger the warning. You can mark it safe and run it. We have filed for a certificate for the app that will prevent this from happening.

Thank you Brad. I’ll wait for the certificate to be filed. Do you know how long that takes? Could you let me know when it’s taken care of? I’ll try the upgrade at that time.

Best,
Matt

@KE2GLS I honestly have no idea how long it will take. We are still looking into it.

Ok thank you Brad.
